The Internet of Things has grown to a point that it’s in nearly every modern home. And why not? The convenience and ease of use allows people to cut down on menial tasks, such as adjusting the thermostat or turning off the lights even when you’re outside or at work.
This 2022, your home should have these 5 essential home devices.

Smart Home Speaker
Smart speakers, or sometimes referred to as smart home speakers, have several useful functions for a connected home. The newest models will have touch screen displays that can show you the nearest pizza place, recipe or tell you what the weather is like for the next week or so. What’s even more nifty is the fact that you can tell the smart speaker to activate your other smart devices via voice commands.
These IoT devices act like the command center and control your appliances, among others. Smart speakers can also double as a tablet or for listening to music and podcasts.
Smart Bulbs
Smart bulbs are absolute must-haves when it comes to creating a connected home. They’re relatively simple in paper but provide so much convenience that you should always include them in your plan.
These devices are like regular light bulbs, but can receive wifi signals and function within your network. Aside from putting them in heavy traffic areas, such as your garage, front door and bedroom, there’s nothing keeping you from changing all your regular light bulbs into smart ones. Then, you can control when they will turn on and off via app or using a smart home speaker.
Smart Thermostat
A thermostat regulates temperature in your house, and traditional setups have a remote control or wall panel where you can see its current state and activity. Its smart counterpart, like the smart light, can be connected via wi-fi so it can be commanded to cool down your home even when you’re 10 or 15 minutes away. You can activate it via Siri or Alexa if you’re busy doing something, such as searching for new casinos to play on your computer.
Smart Plug
In theory, you can turn any appliance or device into a smart item with the use of smart plugs. These accessories connect to your network and can be turned on and off via voice or app, which means you can effectively control the device it’s plugged into remotely.
Smart plugs are similar to smart bulbs- the more you can get and install, the better. With it, you can automate nearly any process in your house, from lighting to temperature and even cooking.
Smart Security Camera
Every house should have a security camera or CCTV to protect its inhabitants. Security cameras have come a long way, with some models offering smart functions and the ability to record videos with a trigger, such as when motion is detected. When connected, these cameras can send you real time notifications when there’s an intruder detected or if a family member arrives or leaves. Some even have low light or infrared features for ‘seeing’ in the dark.
