The end of 2021 was an exciting time for Mac users as Apple released macOS Monterey. However, if you’re one of the users who chose not to upgrade, you may wonder if it’s time to do so now. To help you decide, we’ll go through the pros and cons of upgrading.
Why Consider Upgrading Immediately?
New Productivity Tools
macOS Monterey brings some brand-new productivity features online. The following additions will streamline your work processes:
● Live Text: Gives you access to several functions like copy, paste, and translate.
● Quick Note: Let’s you capture notes on the fly.
● Focus Mode Lets you set your working hours, blocking notifications during the busiest times.
● Shortcuts: You love the app on your iPhone — now you can use it on your Mac. It’s also a good alternative to Automator.
Other Useful Advances
● Low Power Mode: Helps manage your machine’s battery life. It’s especially beneficial with older models.
● AirPlay to Mac: Allows you to play content you store on your handheld device through your Mac.
● Shared with You: Is an organization tool that manages Safari, Photos, and Apple media.
● iCloud+: Offers you aliases to use to keep your email address private.
● Private Relay: While still in testing, this feature keeps your IP address private and obscures your location when you’re online.
● Tab Groups: This new feature allows you to organize the websites you visit.
Why Not Upgrade Immediately?
macOS 12 Monterey Requires a 64-bit System
If your machine runs on 32-bit software only, it doesn’t support the new upgrade. Also, any software, apps, or plugins that run on less than 64-bit software will no longer work.
Compatibility
Monterey is compatible with the widest variety of Macs. Before updating, check to see if your model is on the list. Most models from 2015 onward will work, but the options before that are limited.
A Mac Pro from late 2013, for example, may be compatible. An older Mac Pro will not be.
It’s also worth checking the compatibility of the hardware. If, for example, you have an M1 chip, you should be fine. If, however, you use an Intel chip, it might be better to wait a few more months.
Manufacturer Updates
Another thing to check is for manufacturer updates of hardware and software. The new OS might also affect your ability to use websites with unique features such as 918Kiss. It may take a while for companies to catch up, and an upgrade may stop programs from running.
It’s advisable to check any software you rely upon for compatibility with Monterey.
No Universal Control Yet
This is the feature most Mac users looked forward to the most. Unfortunately, it won’t be available until Spring 2022.
Should I Upgrade?
It’s a complex question. You should make sure that everything you need to use on your computer is compatible with Monterey first. Then decide whether the new features are worthwhile.
For our money, the new security features may tip the scales for some users. However, others may prefer to wait a few months until the release of Universal Control.
