Unique Jobs You Didn’t Know Existed

Just a couple of generations ago, people would often have a “job for life”, meaning the company they begin working for at the start of their career is the same one they retire from at the end of it.

The ever-evolving jobs market has changed this though. In-part, the move from manual work to office jobs and globalisation have meant that many people have seen their old jobs disappear. Additionally, millennials are more willing to resign if their employer’s values don’t align with their own. They’re also far more likely to make career moves to find more rewarding work than the generations before them.

That means most people entering the workplace today can expect to change careers up to seven times in their lifetime.

If you’re considering a career change, but don’t want to follow a traditional path, why not consider one of these jobs that you probably didn’t even know existed?

Professional Poker Player

Poker is one of the most popular card games played around the world today, with this fame and favour created by high-profile tournaments, celebrities, and easy access to online poker sites.

While many just play for fun, others do it for a living. Professional poker players will compete in online and live tournaments, aiming to walk away with the large cash prizes put up by the organisers.

Most start out by learning to play simple variants like five card draw poker before switching to others like Texas hold ’em. They’ll typically play low stakes games with friends and relatives in person and/or online to build up their skills before moving on to games with higher buy-ins.

It sounds like a glamorous lifestyle, but being a professional poker player requires a lot of hard work and dedication. During competitions, they’ll spend all day sitting at tables and will dedicate a lot of time to practising when they’re at home.

Food Stylist

There are plenty of people that work as stylists today, making people look great by fixing their hair, wardrobe, or makeup. But did you know that food also needs stylists?

If you’ve ever looked at a burger on a restaurant’s menu or in one of its advertisements and salivated at the mere prospect of devouring it, only to be disappointed by the second-rate recreation that you’re served up, then you’ve seen the work of a food stylist.

There are all kinds of tricks that food stylists employ to get the perfect photos of grub. Often, this means using inedible ingredients like sponges, deodorant, and even tampons to create different effects for the cameras.

Netflix Tagger

Netflix has revolutionised the way we watch movies and TV shows, but have you ever wondered how the company can so accurately suggest content that you’ll want to watch next?

There are two key elements to this. The first is a computer algorithm that compares your watch habits to the company’s nearly two million customers.

The second is a team of “Netflix Taggers” whose job is to watch its shows all day to append suitable keywords that can help the algorithm work its magic. While it sounds like a dream, it’s not just about watching your favourite shows, you’ll also have to binge hours and hours of content you won’t like too.

It’s probably worth it though since you get paid to watch TV, receive early access to new Netflix originals, and have the flexibility to work from home (and even stay in bed) on a schedule that works for you.
