Available from retail locations from 24 September 2021, and less than a year after its predecessor, are four new phones from Apple. These are the iPhone 13, the smaller iPhone 13 mini and two premium phones, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. With the release of the phones so soon after the iPhone 12, it is most likely that it will be those with an iPhone 11 that will be looking at this model as an upgrade. Here, we look at what to expect from the iPhone 13 and whether the upgrade is worth it
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini
Apple’s new and extremely fast A15 Bionic chip is built with a 5nm processor in the new iPhones. The CPU is 6-core and the fastest of any smartphone on the market. The new 4-core GPU allows for advanced graphics which may be worth an upgrade for those who enjoy Bovada. The devices have an IP68 rating to withstand dust and are water-resistant up to 1.5m for up to thirty minutes.
Upgrades
The screen size of the iPhone 13 is 6.1 inches, up from 5.8 inches for the iPhone 11 and a screen size of 5.4 inches for the 13 Mini. The screens have a brighter Retina XDR display at 1200 nits. Unlike the iPhone 11’s LED screen, the iPhone 13 screens are all OLED.
The dimensions of the iPhone 13 are similar to the 12 and it weighs 174 grams whilst the 13 Mini weighs just 141 grams. The battery allows up to 19 hours of video playback in the iPhone 13 and 17 hours for the 13 Mini.
The rear-facing dual-camera system now features a 12MP wide-angle camera, a much bigger lens than the iPhone 12 that can pull in a lot more light than last year’s model. There is a new Cinematic Mode which blurs the background as you shoot though it is also possible to adjust manually or switch between subjects. All iPhone 13 models also support Night Mode shooting and have ProRes codec for a more pro-level of video. The differences between the 13 and 13 mini are simply the size of the handset, the battery and the price.
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Whilst the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini are probably the best non-pro phones Apple has ever built. However, the larger 6.7inch screen on the iPhone 13 Pro Max will likely make it more appealing than the 6.1inch screen on all the other models. The Pro and Pro Max have an extra camera, a slightly upgraded processor and a more advanced 120Hz display.
The Pro and Pro Max have the same cameras, processor, features and design language which means the choice between the two is largely related to how comfortable they are to use. The 12-megapixel cameras have wide apertures cameras and are much bigger than the iPhone 12 Pro. It is the quality of the photographic improvements that are likely to make people upgrade to the faster processor and better camera sensors in the iPhone 13 iterations. The first 120Hz display for an iPhone is worth an upgrade as is the ceramic shield to make the screen better able to survive being dropped.
